When most people think of “autopilot,” they think of something that requires absolutely no effort on their part. That is why these ads are so appealing–who doesn’t want to make money with absolutely no effort? I sure do! But let’s be honest here. Is it possible to make money with no work or effort? I suppose you could win the lottery. But even then, you DO have to get out and buy the ticket. And the odds are strongly stacked against you.

The truth is that it is possible to set up your business to run on autopilot–to have your computer do the work for you. What is important to understand is the work, time and effort it takes to get your business to the point where it runs on autopilot.
Imagine that you are a pilot of a small plane. First, you guide the aircraft to the runway. Then, with guidance from air traffic control, you guide the plane down the runway, picking up speed. When the appropriate speed is reached, you guide the plane into the air. Once in the air, you must gain altitude and direct the plane so that it is following the flight plan. Only then can you put the plane on autopilot. The same is true for your business. There is a lot of start of work and effort required before you can put your marketing on autopilot. And keep in mind that although the plane (your business) is on autopilot, you still have to check in and make adjustments to keep it on course!
